Translators worldwide, brace yourselves for the first Day Awards on September 30, 2019. It’s an auspicious day because it is also the International Translation Day, a fitting event to thank and honor all the untiring and dedicated translators around the globe.
The Day Awards is an initiative of Day Translations, Inc. to honor the hard-working men and women translators around the world. Day Translations recognizes the amount of contribution translators provide individuals, corporations large and small, and organizations in different industry sectors. Translators are bridges, ensuring that the language gap among individuals, companies and organizations does not become a problem. Translators are professionals. They see to it that they always deliver accurate, grammatically correct and culturally appropriate translations. Many translators are subject matter experts. They have worked in their particular field of expertise before becoming a translator.
The event is in two parts – WORLD AWARDS and DAY TEAM AWARDS. The much-awaited part honors the translators from around the world, recognized for their professionalism, excellent work and dedication to their work. Day Awards gives recognition to the different aspects of the language services industry, from the tools of the trade to the excellent job translators manifested in some very outstanding works.
WORLD AWARDS
The nominations for the world category of the Day Awards come from translators themselves. The industry has its community, so peers nominate the people and their works, the products of their hard work and dedication to their job. For some, it may look like just another day at the office, but for others, the works of their peers merits recognition.
Best CAT Tool 2019
CAT Tools automate the most repetitive aspects of translators’ work, and they surely are their best allies.
Nominees:
Winner: SDL Trados
SDL Trados is a Computer-Assisted Translation tool originally developed by German company Trados GmbH, and released in 1984. Today, it’s internationally distributed through SDL Trados. Its 2019 version supports more than 70 file formats.
Best Translation Management Tool 2019
This is another tool that helps automate repetitive tasks, and handle translation memories thus reducing the amount of work necessary to deliver cohesive, high quality translations, making them become more productive than ever.
Nominees:
Winner: SDL Worldserver
SDL Worldserver was developed by the same company as SDL Trados. It’s a tool that centralizes, manages and makes effective translation projects. It’s currently one of the most-used translation management tools, helping teams around the world to have efficient and transparent workflows.
Best Subtitles for a Non-English Film
Translators help people from different cultures share experiences and grow together, and that’s what is at the heart of the work of language professionals who specialize in subtitling.
Nominees:
Winner: ATLANTICS
Atlantics (originally Atlantique) was directed by Mati Diop. She was the first African female director to compete in Cannes.
Best Localized Game
Films aren’t the only pieces of art that are masterfully translated every year. Game localization makes it possible for the best games in the market to be enjoyed by players from all around the globe.
Nominees:
Winner: Resident Evil 2: The Remake
The remake of CapCom’s Resident Evil 2 was released in January 2019. It sold more than 4 million copies within its first month, and received a Game Critics Award. The game is currently fascinating gamers across continents in 9 languages, and expanding.
Best Translated Book
Written fiction has been one of the oldest, but is now the most recently recognized form of art.
Nominees:
Winner: Will and Testament
Will and Testament, by Vigdis Hjorth was translated by Charlotte Baslund and published by Verso Fiction. The book has been translated into more than 20 languages to date.
DAY TEAM AWARDS
The awards recognize the contributions of the men and women of Day Translations, Inc. who collectively contribute to the smooth operation of the company, leading to its consistent excellent performance and business success.
Best Day Project Manager of the Year
Project Managers make it possible to handle as many clients in as many diverse projects. They make sure our company gets the right talent to the right places at the right time, and meet our quality goals and exceed our clients’ expectations.
Winner: María Ferro
Maria Is our Senior Project Manager. She’s from Colombia, a bilingual, and has been with us for 4-1/2 years.
Best Day Manager of the Year
Our managers are the backbone of our business. They keep our internal operations consistent, our customers happy and our values at the forefront.
Winner: Melissa Arias
Melissa is our Operations Manager. She’s from Costa Rica, a bilingual and has been with us for almost five years.
Best Day Employee of the Year
We rely on talented, intelligent and committed people who help us succeed as team players.
Winner: Suraj Gupta
Suraj is our lead full-stack software engineer. He’s from India, speaks three languages: Bengali, Hindi and English, and has been with us for almost two years.
Best Interpreter of the Year
Some of our interpreters have to be ready to assist in medical emergencies, late at night, on the phone, while others are responsible for the success of sports events being broadcasted live to international audiences.
Winner: Manuel Siri García
Manuel is based in the Dominican Republic; his language pair is English and Spanish, and he specializes in tourism, politics, media, and finance. He has been with us for 7 months.
Best Translator of the Year
Translators are at the core of our services at Day Translations. For more than a decade, we have relied on an international network of 10,000 experts from all around the globe, who has helped us through our journey. Here are the ones who, according to their peers, have exceeded expectations across the board.
Winner: Andrea Cincotta
Andrea is based in the United States; her language pair is English and Spanish, and she has a background in medical and nutrition-related language services, law, economics, and entertainment. She has been with us for nine years now.
Inspiration
The same idea – that excellent work should be recognized is what inspired Day Translations to create the annual Day Awards. It is also due to the long term vision of Sean Patrick Hopwood, President and CEO of Day Translations, Inc. He wants to celebrate and honor the men and women and their untiring dedication to a very complex and challenging job that may require them to work at odd hours during emergencies.
Translators ensure that communication becomes efficient and effortless through accurate work. They understand the nuances of the language, the cultural preferences of the target users and see to it that the intended message of the original author is delivered precisely or in context.

It’s difficult to judge who the winners will be, but in this case, there are no losers. Every translator and individual who works in the industry deserves recognition for their hard work. While translation is difficult, it is a rewarding and fascinating job. Translators work with people from different cultures. The industry espouses diversity in language, in culture. Translators have to be objective, unbiased, consistent, flexible and focused. They are a special breed, and we salute all of them.
