Our planet has more that 400 billion trees. But this number seems to be not enough to stem the carbon dioxide emission that plagues the planet. Out of these billions of trees are some of the most awesome, significant and historical trees you could find.

1. Anne Frank Tree. In the Netherlands is a 160 plus-year old horsechesnut tree planted in the center of the city of Amsterdam. It was the tree that Anne Frank described in her novel, The Diary of a Young Girl. It was the tree that gave her hope while hiding from the Nazis.
2. Bodhi Tree. This is said to be the tree where Siddharta Gautama achieved enlightenment about 2,500 years ago, and is one of the four most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The fig tree is located in Bodh Gaya in India.Although ordered to be killed the tree grew back exactly on the same spot.
3. Banyan Tree. A banyan tree was planted in the Banyan Tree Park in Lahaina, Hawaii in 1873. The tree, imported from India was used to commemorate the 50th year of the first Christian mission in Lahaina. At the time of its planting, it was just 8 feet tall. Today it measures 60 feet high (18 meters). With 12 major trunks, the tree covers 2/3 of an acre in front of the Courthouse Square.
4. Lone Pine. This single pine tree stands as a solitary guard on the spot where one of the fiercest battles in WWI was staged at the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. It was planted as a memorial to the New Zealand and Australian soldiers that fought in Gallipoli.
5. Sacred Fig Tree. Believed to be a sapling from the Bodhi Tree in India, the Sacred Fig Tree found in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka was planted in 288 B.C. It is a sacred relic for Sri Lankan Buddhists. Moreover, it is the oldest living tree planted by humans with a known planting date in the world.
6. Cotton Tree. In Sierra Leone, a cotton tree grows in Freetown, the country’s capital. It was found in 1792 by former American slaves who got their freedom through fighting with the British in the American War of Independence. Offering prayers for prosperity and peace are often done on the site where the tree is located.
7. Boab Prison Tree. Now a tourist attraction, the Boab Prison Tree found in Derby, South Australia is a massive hollow boab tree. It was used as a prison in the 1860s for Indigenous Australians before they were brought to Derby for sentencing.
8. Árbol del Tule. Found in Oaxaca in Mexico, this Montezuma cypress is a single tree with the stoutest trunk in the world. Included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it is also called the Tree of Life due to the animal shapes seen on its trunk.
9. Methuselah Tree. Its exact location will never be disclosed as it needs protecting. In 1964, a much older tree, Prometheus was cut down accidentally. The bristlecone pine is 4,843 years old.
10. Pirangi Cashew Tree. In Brazil is a 117-year old single cashew tree that covers 8,500 square meters of land. It is 80 times larger than a normal cashew tree. About 80,000 fruits are harvested from it annually.
