The Autonomous Region of Bougainville, which is a part of Papua New Guinea, has one main island, Bougainville Island. The Rotokas Alphabet – The Smallest Alphabet in the World
The Rotokas alphabet, which is used in writing Rotokas language, is the smallest alphabet currently in use. It is a subset of the Latin alphabet and only has twelve letters: A E I G K O P R S T U V. Most Rotokas people are literate in their own tongue.
Another dialect, whose status is unknown, is spoken in the settlement of Atsilima (Atsinima) on the west coast. According to Allen and Hurd (1963), it is a sublanguage. The language is said to have been greatly impacted by interaction with Keriaka; Rotokas speakers regard it as a hybrid of the two.
Language Spoken
Approximately 4000 people in Bougainville speak Rotokas. It belongs to the East Papuan language family. One of the smallest phonemic inventory in the world, and perhaps the shortest alphabet, it has six consonants (written p t/s k v r g) and five possibly ten vowels (written a e I o u). The only language with allegedly fewer spoken sounds is Pirah.
Each of the three voiced consonant phonemes in the Central Rotokas dialect has significant allophonic diversity. As a result, it is challenging to choose an accurate set of IPA symbols to represent them. The bilabial, alveolar, and velar locations of articulation, each having a voiced and an unvoiced phoneme, are included in the entire consonant inventory.
Vowels can be short or lengthy (written twice). It is unclear if they reflect 10 phonemes or just five; in other words, it is unclear whether “long” vowels are really independent sounds or merely combinations of two similar vowels. Additionally, in Rotokas vowel sequences frequently occur.
Adjectives and demonstrative pronouns come before the nouns they modify in Rotokas, which is a verb-final language, whereas postpositions come after. But the majority of adverbs come after the primary verb.
The People of North Bougainville
Australo-Melanesians were the first people to live on Bougainville, and they most likely came from the Bismarck Archipelago. The Lapita civilization was brought to the islands by Austronesian peoples some 3,000 years ago, along with pottery, agriculture, and domesticated animals including pigs, dogs, and chickens.
Although both Austronesian and non-Austronesian languages are still spoken on the islands, there has been extensive population mixing such that linguistic distinctions are no longer associated with cultural or genetic differences.
Rotokas – A Disappearing Language?
One island’s population speaks 18 different languages, including the Rotokas language. A 30,000-year history of human communication and cultural advancement seems to be coming to an end with its vanishing.
Many of the languages of New Guinea are so unique that they have no known connections to any other languages in the world, not even to other New Guinean tongues. There are spoken languages as diverse as English and Russian every few kilometers across tribes. The majority of such dialects and languages have less than 1,000 native speakers.
